Strolling ‘n Dining

20130105-134215.jpgToday is a good day to eat. Starting with the much anticipated breakfast which met our high expectations. The sparkling wine wasn’t the best I’ve had but good enough for breakfast…

After making sure we wouldn’t be hungry for a few hours we took a stroll in the neighborhood, we spotted a somewhat intoxicated gentleman who tried to enter a nearby pub with this beer in his hand, he was obviously not welcome and got out after a few seconds, chugged the beer can and entered the next pub, and we didn’t see him get out so it seems that his determination to avoid getting sober paid off.20130105-141716.jpg

We stopped in many stores to look at many things, Mona got herself an army cap in some shop which sold 2nd World War memorabilia / miscellaneous old stuff or to quote a character from a game I’ve played too much “Some may call this junk. Me I call them treasures”. I know my father could have spend months scavenging items there but we left after less than an hour. After quite some walking we stopped at Cafe GianMario and had a pizza for lunch, the establishment was Italian which also meant that the male owner chatted with his customers while the female staff where working hard with a constant smile on their faces.

When returning to the flat I checked the blog and realized that the server was no longer responding, and recall that I didn’t turn off Transmission which had this nasty kernel-level bug I had seen a few times before. Well well, I did have the blog cached so I threw up a temp blog on WordPress and will sort out that later. After a bit of rest it was time to visit Costes which had received a star in Guide Michelin so we thought we would try a tasting menu. It was nice and earned, especially the deserts where splendid and well presented although the service wasn’t quite as good as could be expected. We left fully satisfied and barely able to walk home before falling a sleep after another day of Budapest.

Rushing to Relaxation

As most trips do, this one started off a bit rough as well. The flight was to depart at 08:55, meaning that either the bus getting there at 07:15 or a taxi were the options. We went for the environmental choice and set our alarms accordingly. We woke up, got to the tram station and were informed that due to vehicle issues the trams were late. This was unfortunate but we quickly walked to Korsvägen, hopped on a new tram and got to Centralstationen, jogged to Nils Ericsson just in time to see the bus leave.

We decided there was no rush now and had breakfast before calling a (Mini)taxi, they were out of cars and by the time we got one it was getting a bit too close to closed gate with potential morning traffic. This was when I realized I no longer were in possession of the printed boarding passes. A quick run to where we had breakfast saved me 80 Euro since the papers were still there. We got to the airport quickly, well at Säve there was no queue and the flight was late so in the end we could have gone with a later bus.

After landing and buying some local currency we got on a bus to the subway station, where we had to buy new tickets again. A little guesswork combined with google maps got us off at the right subway station and we were strolling towards our hotel when we came across a soup and bagel shop which looked popular. It was cheap and tasty and served as a filling lunch.

Once we checked in at Bohem Art and found that the room was very nice, heated floor in the bathroom and art is always pleasant, we lay down for a rest…

When we woke up we reserved a table at Costes for tomorrow and then took a longer stroll north and ended up at Cafe Kör which we’d read about. Not surprising they had really nice food to low prices and tables quickly got filled with locals as we sat there, I enjoyed a mixed skewer with pepper sauce and potatoes since they, again not surprisingly, lacked vegetarian dishes. We then walked back home after replenishing our cash for a decent ATM (much better exchange rate) and got to bed rather early.

Home is wherever I’m with you

As we woke up it felt a bit sad to have our last breakfast in Vietnam, but we would on the other hand soon be able to cuddle with Java. We checked out, and headed towards French Quarters this time to hopefully see some nice architecture while doing the last minute (hours really) shopping. To be honest the architecture wasn’t that impressive, a lot of things have been badly managed and old buildings were deteriorating in a depressingly fast manner, Hoi An beats Hanoi any day when it comes to architecture.

We stopped by a French surrealist exhibition which was quite nice, as well as countless galleries with local artists. After a few hours of shopping and browsing art it was however time to say goodbye. We decided we would take the offer of 15USD and have the ride to the airport arranged by our hotel rather than taking a regular cab. Unfortunately Mona’s scarf she had managed to not loose during the whole trip was left behind but all in all nothing worse than that.

We had our second breakfast at Heathrow while waiting for our last leg, and were less tired than expected since we got a few hours of sleep on the flight from Hong Kong. As we arrived in Göteborg we were almost surprised that all luggage had gotten there as well. Then a fast, silent and expensive taxi ride later we met a very happy Java in our home. After unpacking we thought we would go to IKEA and pick up parts for the upcoming kitchen renovation – it was the last day in some campaign so it would probably not be many people there, right? In the end it went surprisingly good and we managed to stay up until almost 22 before falling asleep in our own bed. Over and out for this time!
